There are many different types of violet wands, so it can be a bit tough choosing a wand kit. Everyone's tastes are different. There is such a variety in violet wands and kits, that there is one to fit your preferences, your pocket, and your style of play.
Of course, the decision to include a violet wand into your sex life isn't very difficult. A basic violet wand with a single electrode is often all you need, and will you give you many hours of enjoyment. But how do you decide if you are looking for something more than basic?
The first decision to be made, is how long and how hard you think you might want to use a wand. That is because the biggest difference in violet wands is going to be the material that comprises their capacitors, and the different materials will make the most difference in how long you can use them.
Capacitors can be made out of many types of materials; wax, waxed paper, resins, ceramic, mylar, or polymers. Vintage violet ray devices (violet wand parents which can be used like violet wands) have wax or waxed paper capacitors. In these single-piece vintage units, you will have to allow them to cool down 10 minutes after each 10 minutes of use in order to prolong their life. This type of violet ray device can be perfect for people who just want 'a little' wand play for variety but they can't be used exactly like violet wands.
Since vintage units ARE 50-70 years old, you don't want to be ruining the coils on your vintage wands by running it for hours on end.
That brings up another point about 50-70 year old vintage devices. Your FIRST safety measure in a violet wand or related device is the integrity of its wiring. Please don't make the mistake of assuming a 50 year old violet ray is safe to use on human beings 'as is.' 50 year old devices mean 50 year old wiring. Think about THAT for a while.
If you are thinking about a vintage violet ray device, also give some thought on how you wish to use it. Do you want to employ it more for erotic sensation or for pain? Different violet rays can have different 'feels' and different strengths, varying not only from manufacturer to manufacturer, but also from model to model, or even among same model wands.
If choosing a vintage wand, there is a very important safety consideration. It is not hard to find vintage violet ray devices at flea markets or online auctions. However, as I said, vintage violet rays that are 50-70 years old, have wiring that is 50-70 years old. This can be -deadly- if there is a fault or short in such old wiring, because one leg of a violet wand circuit is ALWAYS connected to household mains current. Therefore, if purchasing a vintage device, either get one that has been rebuilt by a knowledgable person, or make sure you take it to someone to have the internal AND external wiring checked for deterioration before using it on someone else. That can not be stressed enough. Do not take chances with someone else's safety by trusting blindly to 50 year old electrical wiring. If they don't know better, YOU need to.
New violet wands (the kinky grandchildren of antique violet ray devices) have capacitors made out of mylar, ceramic, or polymer. The most popular violet wands have ceramic capacitors, or the newer self-healing polymer capacitors. Both will allow you to play for hours without stopping, and the new polymer capacitors can mean a much longer overall lifespan for your wand so that you enjoy it for years to come.
The next thing to consider is what kind of accessories it comes with. Would you prefer to employ all the nuances of sensations a violetwand is capable of? Though a standard kit has a wide range of adjustment and techniques on its own, a kit with a variety of attachments or electrodes will give you even more options.
What about a specialty kit? Think about what other fetishes you enjoy. Do you like fireplay? Then consider a violet wand kit with more fireplay options and accessories. Do you like flogging? You'll need some of the violet wand accessories that can allow you to do some electrified flogging.
Cost is another factor. Good reconditioned, used and pre-owned devices can cost a fraction of new wands, but may not be repairable if something goes wrong, due to the fact that their parts are no longer manufactured. New wands under warranty may be a better buy over the long term. You can find those in basic kits or sold alone so you can purchase only those accessories you wish, or add to your kit as time goes by.
Whatever your choices, with the wide variety of devices avaialble, you're sure to find something that suits your individual tastes, play style, and needs.
